Ronaldo has become the first sportsperson to his 100 million followers on the social media platform, leaving the likes of rival Lionel Messi, who has 70.8m followers.

The Portuguese superstar is a regular user of the social network and frequently displays pictures of him playing in his most recent fixtures, attracting millions of likes every time.

The 32-year-old only trails behind pop stars Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez – as well as Instagram’s own account.

His closest sports rival is Barcelona and Brazil forward Neymar with 74m, while rival for best player in the world Lionel Messi has just 71m by comparison.
